This original story, inspired by "Johnny Got His Gun" and Edogawa Ranpo's short story "Imomushi (Caterpillar)," depicts the foolishness and tragedy brought about by war through the story of a married couple caught in its turmoil.
It was entered in the competition section of the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, where Shinobu Terajima won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. At the awards ceremony, Koji Wakamatsu, the director of this film, went on stage in place of Terajima, who could not attend, and read out her comment via email.
[Story]
Shigeko lives with her husband, Kyuzo, who has lost his limbs and voice in the war and is regarded with strange looks by the villagers, yet is worshipped as a "living war god." The day of the end of the war approaches, leaving Kyuzo remembering the events on the battlefield and becoming confused, while Shigeko feels empty...
