Released in '78, this is the 3rd album by Chicago-born tenor and flute player "Chico Freeman." After graduating high school, he taught at the music school in Chicago and took classes as a graduate student at Governors State University, earning a master's degree in composition and theory, making him a rare player. Incidentally, the album jacket was handled by pianist "Muhal Richard Abrams," who is also the founder of .
The sublime atmosphere of "Two Over One" is superb, with "Hilton Ruiz"'s sensitive piano touch, "Junieeh Booth"'s basslines that groove with great timing, "Elvin Jones"'s sharp, grounded drumming, and "Jumma Santos"'s Afro-percussion, all topped by "Chico"'s saxophone, which dances with a refined, wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Already, elements of , which cannot be described as directly descended from , are added, creating a complex yet profound, compassionate, and fantastical beauty in "Beyond The Rain," a wonderful sound that expands. The excellent arrangement crafted by a theorist grabs the listener's heart in "Pepe's Samba," a masterpiece with "Elvin"'s outstanding drumming.
This is a US, Contemporary original (S7640) pressing from '78. It's a rare record that's hardly seen in recent years.
